Why This Stays a Calculator, Not a Prediction

This tool only does the subtraction — boat height plus your margin, compared to the number you looked up. It doesn't estimate today's tide or guess a bridge's clearance for you, because a wrong guess on a bridge is a lot more expensive than a slow afternoon looking one up. That's also why the field asks you to bring the charted number yourself, sourced straight from the city.

About the Local Tide Range

Cape Coral's canals sit on the Caloosahatchee, which the nearest NOAA tide station (Fort Myers, Station 8725520) shows as a fairly modest tidal swing for this stretch of coast — roughly 0.9 feet between mean low and mean higher-high water, with mean high water sitting only about 1.1 feet above the station's chart datum. In practice, that means the charted (mean-high-water) clearance is usually close to your worst case in ordinary conditions — you'll often see a little more room at lower tide, not less. What the chart datum doesn't cover: storm surge, king tides, or heavy rain runoff, all of which can push water higher and clearance lower than the charted number.
